This satellite conference was broadcast on November 18, 2003. The conference was hosted at approximately 49 sites in 22 states. The conference was designed to help natural resource professionals and cooperative development specialists to:

  • Gain a better understanding of cooperatives and a deeper insight into some of the successes and challenges of cooperatives;
  • Evaluate whether the forestry cooperative model is right for your area and if so, how to further the discussion locally.
  • See how cooperatives can complement other landowner assistance programs such as Tree Farm, Forest Stewardship, and woodland owner associations.
  • Hear first hand about the experiences of forestry cooperative initiatives from Massachusetts, Virginia, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Washington.

Cooperative members, consultants, service providers and researchers provided a framework for a better understanding of this opportunity and its role in helping private forest landowners achieve their objectives.

The conference was sponsored by the Local Forest Cooperatives Working Group--a joint venture of the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin and the USDA Forest Service with funding from the USDA CSREES.
