             United Nations to Hold Celebrations
            for International Day of Co-operatives
          -----------------------------------------

Geneva, Switzerland, 15 June 1996 - For Immediate Release: -
Co-operative leaders from around the world will meet at the
United Nations Headquarters in New York on 1 July, 1996, to
celebrate the International Day of Co-operatives.

The event, which will include a panel discussion followed by a
Press Conference, will be organised by the United Nations, the
International Co-operative Alliance and the Committee for the
Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC).

This event will provide leaders of the international co-operative
movement an opportunity to discuss with United Nations senior
officials and inform the international media about the actual and
potential contribution of co-operative business enterprise to the
achievement of goals held in common with the United Nations. It
will facilitate an exchange of views between the United Nations
and the international co-operative movement on ways and means to
further define and enhance the partnership between them. The
panel discussion, which will be chaired by Mr. Nitin Desai,
Under-Secretary-General for Policy Co-ordination and Sustainable
Development, and responsible for United Nations activities in
support of the international co-operative movement, will focus
on the following issues:

* the potential of the co-operative movement to participate as
a distinct stakeholder and full partner with the United Nations
in the follow-up to Copenhagen, Beijing and Istanbul and
institutional procedures and structures whereby such
participation may be most effective;

* the contribution of co-operative business enterprise to the
achievement of the goals of the International Year and Decade for
the Eradication of Poverty and to the realisation of the goals
of the World Food Summit;

* the potential of the co-operative movement to develop human
resources and institutional capabilities;

* the co-operative movement as a means for the economic, social
and political empowerment of women;

* the contribution of co-operative business enterprise to the
provision of appropriate and affordable social services;

* the capacity of the co-operative movement to undertake
appropriate technical assistance as a complement to governmental
multilateral and bilateral assistance;

* the ways and means whereby partnerships may be strengthened
between co-operatively organised business enterprises and the
United Nations development system.

During the event a presentation will be made on the recently
completed global review and proposals for policy co-ordination
in respect of co-operative enterprise in the health and social
care sectors, prepared by the United Nations Department for
Policy Co-ordination and Sustainable Development in collaboration
with the International Co-operative Alliance.

The seven panellists will be drawn from the United Nations,
International Co-operative Alliance, International Federation of
Agricultural Producers and the Committee for the Promotion and
Advancement of Cooperatives.

A Press Conference will take place immediately following the
Panel Discussion to which representatives of national media
accredited to the United Nations will be invited. Information
will be widely diffused through the co-operative movement~s own
media and to United Nations Information Centres world-wide.
After a luncheon hosted by the ICA in the Delegates~ Dining Room
at the United Nations Headquarters, UN TV/Radio will interview
panellists and other participants.

The event will end with a presentation of videos on international
assistance in support of co-operative enterprise which will take
place in the Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium.

It is anticipated that there will be a high level of
participation from both the United Nations and the international
co-operative movement. Senior officials and specialist staff of
the United Nations, leaders of the international co-operative
movement and representatives of member organisations of the
Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives are
invited to attend.
