Suzanne Maisonneuve-Benoit, administrator at the Federation des caisses populaires Desjardins in Quebec, was nominated to the Board of Confederation des caisses populaires et d'economie Desjardins.
This is the first time ever that there have been two women on the Board. The other woman is Mrs. Madelain Lapierre, President of the Federation des caisses populaires Desjardins of Richelieu-Yamaska.
Roger Kerinec, former President of the International Co-operative Alliance, passed away on 1 April, 1998, at the age of 76. He was President of the French National federation of Consumer Co-operatives (FNCC) from 1973 to 1983. Roger Kerinec was President of the ICA from 1975 to 1984.
Woytek Pawlak, an expert in co-operative banking in Poland died at the age of 42. Born in Poland, Woytek Pawlak started his professional career at the French Credit Agricole. He subsequently worked as adviser to the Minister of Agriculture and the Parliament in Poland. He was one of the co-authors of the Law on Restructuring of the Co-operative Banks, which laid the foundations for the development of modern banking system in rural areas.
Jirozaemon Saito died on 12 June 1998 at the age of 89. Mr. Saito served as President of primary level fishery co-operatives for 43 years. He was the Chairman of the ICA Fisheries Committee for 16 years from 1976 to 1992.
