Message from Royal Prof.Ungku A. Aziz, Chairman of the ICA Regional Assembly for Asia and the Pacific
************************************************************************************

Please accept my sincerest greetings and best wishes for the success for all our members in the ROAP region.

In our region, the Co-operative Movement has had a mixed pattern of experiences which differ according to time and place.

While the first half of the year seemed to offer everlasting green and sunny vistas, the second half saw the inception of what may be a rather cold, dark winter for many of our economies.

There are also wide differences between countries regarding the consequences of the economic crisis. Some have faced up to relatively mild problems with vigour while others have withered under the pressure of currency devaluation, inflation, trade imbalances and rising unemployment.

I am confident genuine co-operatives, whose membership loyalty is strong, will be resilient enough to meet these challenges. Others will have to re-examine their management, membership loyalty and short term objectives.

I look forward to meet colleagues at the Assembly in Seoul in October.
