ICA's Agricultural Committee meets in Sri Lanka
****************************************
The 30th meeting of the ICA Committee on Agriculture for Asia and the
Pacific was held at the Hotel Holiday Inn in Colombo, Sri Lanka on
August 14, 1997. The meeting was held alongside a one-day study tour to
the head office of Co-operative Industries Federation Limited (Ceyesta),
the Coconut Triangle Co-operative Milk Society in Kuliyapitiya and
Negambo MPCS super-market and was attended by 17 participants from
seven countries.

The meeting was chaired by Shil-Kwan Lee of Korea in the absence of Nai
Soo Lee and vice-chairman Dr. Virendra Kumar, who were unable to
attend.

Robby Tulus, ICA Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, welcomed
the committee members to the important meeting saying agricultural
co-operatives have reached a crossroads. Concern over health hazards has
caused a change in consumer behaviour. He also said the International
Co-operative Trade Network (ICTN) is being facilitated to promote trade
and introduce fair trade concepts into business practice.

The meeting was inaugurated by Anton Alfred, Secretary of the
Co-operative Development Ministry of Sri Lanka. In his remarks,
Alfred said Asia - predominantly agriculture-based - must enrich
the agricultural sector while responding to new challenges.

Multinationals are promoting their agricultural products, some from
developed countries, through marketing propaganda. He also said that
Japan has started a project in Sri Lanka for sesame cultivation to help the
small farmers. He hoped that this committee will look into all aspects and
recommend suitable measures for agricultural development.

S.Vithanage, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Co-operatives, Sri Lanka,
presented a special paper on agricultural co-op development in Sri Lanka.
The presentation was followed by a discussion.

The secretary of the committee, Guo Yong Kang, made a brief presentation
about the new constitution, which was approved by the committee after a
brief discussion and will be presented at the regional assembly in Seoul,
Korea in 1998.

A proposal to hold a joint meeting/seminar of the Agriculture Committee
and the Consumer Committee, presented by Robby Tulus, was also
approved and will be held in Seoul. Shil-Kwan Lee extended an open
invitation to the committee to attend the meeting in October 1998.
