ICA Regional Consumer Committee meetings in Tokyo

The  30th the meeting of the ICA Committee on Consumer Co-operation
for Asia and the Pacific was held on 24 of October, 1997 at Tokyo. 

The meeting was chaired by Mr. H. Tanaka, chairperson of the committee,
assisted by Mr. Akira Kurimoto, General Manager of the International
Relations Department of the JCCU. 24 members, observers and invitees
from India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand,
Vietnam and the ICA ROAP participated at the meeting.

The most important development was the admission of 5 new members
from India, Nepal and Tonga. Mr. Tanaka, the chairperson of the
committee, has been elected as the vice-chairperson of ICCO. The meeting
approved the work plan of the project.

The committee adopted a resolution to organise a joint seminar between
the agricultural committee and the consumer committee in Korea during
October, 1998. The next meeting of the committee has also been scheduled
for October, 1998 in Korea. 

The members visited Co-op Tokyo and observed the working of three
supermarkets of different sizes.

The meeting was followed by an international symposium on Environment,
organized by the JCCU.  Mr. Robby Tulus, the Regional Director of ICA
presented a position paper on co-operatives in Asia-Pacific on the
co-operatives' contribution to environmental protection.
