ICA President visits Singapore Co-operatives

Roberto Rodrigues, President of the ICA, along with Bruce Thordarson, Director General and Robby Tulus, Regional Director, visited the Singapore co-operative movement, 25-27 April, 1998.

Mr. Rodrigues is the first ICA President to visit Singapore co-operatives, since the inception of the Singapore National Co-operative Federation (SNCF).

The President visited several affiliates of the SNCF and evinced a keen interest in the functioning of these co-operatives. He was particularly happy to note that despite the current economic crisis in the Region, co-operatives, especially in Singapore, were able to maintain their viability and profitability through the innovative strategies adopted by them and the support of their members.

Tan Kin Lian, Chairperson of the SNCF hosted a welcome dinner in honour of Mr. Rodrigues and his delegation. Mr. Rodrigues was returning from Tokyo after attending the ICA Board meeting there.

During the visit, Mr. Rodrigues also met Mr. Chon Choo Seng, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Community Development and the office of the Prime Minister.

Mr. Rodrigues also met with the NTUC Leadership. The Minister for Community Development, Mr. Abdullah Tarmugi was unable to meet Mr. Rodrigues due to his health condition. The SNCF and its affiliates appreciated the visit of ICA President.
