ICA Regional Director meets with the Indonesian Co-operative Minister

ICA Regional Director, Mr. Robby Tulus, met with the new Minister for Co-operatives and Small Business Enterprises, Honourable Adi Sasono.

The Co-operative Minister is an old friend and co-operator of Mr. Tulus, when both were actively involved in the NGO community in the 1970s. Mr. Adi Sasono was then Director of the Institute for Development Studies, whereas Mr. Tulus was Managing Director of the Credit Union movement in Indonesia. They discussed various co-operative issues, primarily about the need for alternative co-operative modalities that can be developed to help alleviate the suffering of the poor co-op members in rural areas, due to the impact of the worst financial crisis in the country.

The Regional Director also informed the Minister about the preparations being made towards the Fifth Co-operative Ministers' Conference planned for October 1999 in Beijing and requested the Minister to send their officials to the sub-regional workshop, tentatively planned for Bangkok early in 1999.

The visit was made in conjunction with a visit of the Regional Director to Indonesia  at the request of the Canadian Co-operative Association, to discuss programming of mutual interest between ICA and CCA.

The Regional Director was accompanied by Messrs. Ibnoe Soedjono and Michael Casey during the visit.
