Regional Update

Change in the Administration of Co-operative Societies

The Annual report ending 30 June 1996 by the Registrar of Co-
operatives and other societies  states that the  administration 
of the co-operative mnd other societies act has been vested with 
the newly formed commercial supervision branch under the Ministry 
of Emergency Services and Consumer Affairs in the Queensland Government.

With the amendments made in 1996, the Registrar has the authority 
to register new societies, administer rules, rule alterations, 
special resolutions, changes of name, charges over society's 
assets, release of charges and prosecute and to receive annual 
returns, auditors reports, liquidations returns  and forms, 
advising  changes of officers and addresses. The Registrar may 
also grant extension of time for holding annual general meeting 
and lodging Annual returns and may grant exemption from the 
prospectus requirements.

The Registrar conducts inspection of societies where appropriate 
and investigates complaints again societies and institute prosecution 
action where necessary.
