Chicago Area Community Energy Cooperative
The Community Energy Cooperative is launching operations in spring 2001 in
three new communities: Elgin, Park Forest, and a portion of Chicago's far
northwest side. This adds to the initiatives begun last year in Pilsen
(expanding in the summer of 2001 to include Little Village), and commercial/industrial
activities in several northwest and southern suburbs.
During summer 2001 the Cooperative is scaling up its energy efficiency and demand
reduction activities, with initiatives in air conditioning, lighting, and
distributed generation. The Cooperative expects to replace at least 5,000
old air conditioners with efficient models. In Pilsen, a block-by-block
neighborhood 'sweep' is beginning to identify and replace old air
conditioners. A lighting retrofit program is providing rebates for energy
efficiency upgrades to business customers. The Cooperative expects to reduce
demand in its target areas by 35 MW over the summer, through both short-term
load management and long-term efficiency strategies - enough to power more
than 10,000 homes.
