Report on Cooperative Startups in Minnesota and Wisconsin

The Center recently completed a preliminary study of success factors in cooperative development. The study examines the development process of 14 cooperative start-ups that are located in Minnesota and Wisconsin and operate in the food or agriculture sectors. The goal of the research was to develop a better understanding of how groups are starting new co-ops, what resources are available to those groups, and what factors during start-up lead to successful cooperative businesses.

We hope to build on this research in the coming years using a written survey to gather more comprehensive quantitative data from a larger sample size of both successful and failed cooperatives.
